Visiting Alaska
Juneau, the capital city of Alaska, welcomes spring and summer with outdoor fun, adventure and culture. Anglers fish throughout May in the 17th Annual Spring King Salmon Derby. Get your 2013 Alaska sport fishing license and join the competition and fun. The 27th Annual Juneau Jazz & Classics Music Festival fills venues across the city with well-known performers, including Arlo Guthrie and Booker T. Jones at Centennial Hall. Runners and athletes choose from a full summer calendar of race events including Juneau’s Seacoast Relay in May, the Frank Maier Memorial Marathon and Douglas Island Half Marathon in July, and the Nifty Fifty Challenge in August.
Arrive in Juneau by cruise ship and have your pick of a scenic day of hiking, whale watching or a stroll through historic downtown Juneau. Pick up a walking tour map of Juneau and discover the city’s history and charm. Hike above the tree line and enjoy the views of Gastineau Channel, Mount Roberts and Mount Juneau. Join a whale watching tour for sightings of humpbacks, killer whales, Steller sea lions and Dall's porpoises.
Alaska’s second largest city, Fairbanks, is the gateway to the wilds of the Last Frontier State. The hub of the Alaska Interior region, Fairbanks offers summer visitors long days to enjoy the sights and attractions. Nearby, the Chena River State Recreation Area is the place to set off on a paddle down the river – and the Chena Hot Springs are well worth the eight-mile hike.
In the heart of the Land of the Midnight Sun, Fairbanks celebrates on the longest day of the year with a variety of events. The Alaska Goldpanners play at the 2013 Midnight Sun baseball game at Growden Memorial Park June 21st. The 2013 Midnight Sun Run, on June 22nd, takes runners on a course from the Patty Center at UAF to Pioneer Park, and on Sunday downtown Fairbanks fills with the fun of the Midnight Sun Festival.
Alaska is a must experience destination for Anglers. Long summer days, abundant resources and pristine wilderness are ideal for fishing. Events from the Homer Jackpot Halibut Derby and the Seward Halibut Tournament to the Kodiak King Salmon Derby and Ketchican’s King Salmon Derby add fun and competition to the sport.
