The Kenai National Wildlife Refuge, located near Soldotna on the Kenai Peninsula, is home to a variety of animal species. Moose, wolves, bears, Dall Sheep, mountain goats, fish, and waterfowl are some of the wildlife that live in the refuge. The land has been protected since 1941, when President Roosevelt first named the area, the Kenai National Moose Refuge.
It became the Kenai National Wildlife Refuge in 1980 and encompasses 1.92 million acres. The refuge conducts scientific research and acts as an educational tool for the public.
