The Alaska Marine Highway System has several stops along the south-central coast of Alaska – home to several stunning port cities bordering the Gulf of Alaska. Passengers of the AMHS may disembark in coastal communities like Chenega Bay, Cordova, Whittier – the closest stop to Anchorage – and Valdez.

Our suggestion? The Valdez Terminal. The AMHS coasts past the Chugach National Forest and Shoup Bay State Marine Park, weaving into Port Valdez. Explore this scenic city surrounded by the glaciated Chugach Mountains, and check out theater, parks, and museums galore. Catch the annual Last Frontier Theatre Conference in May – put on by the Prince William Sound Community College – or explore the Maxine & Jesse Whitney Museum.

For more information on Port Valdez, visit the Valdez Museum & Historical Archive – open daily during the summer, and Thursday through Friday from noon to 5 p.m. during the winter. Initially established in 1901, the Valdez Museum is home to permanent exhibits like “They Came for Gold” and “Richardson Highway – Alaska's First Highway” and even “The Exxon Valdez Oil Spill.”

However, if you’re the outdoor type, make your way to the Jack Bay State Marine Park in the Prince William Sound area – just 15 miles from Valdez. This Alaska marine park features fishing, hiking, and wildlife viewing – a real Alaskan adventure.
